ALICE SPRINGS, Australia — In this scorching hot Outback town, a casino little bigger than an urban car dealership may be emerging as the symbol of an inter-government cyber border war.
Over the past year, Lasseters Casino claims it has taken in AU$90 million in online bets from the United States, Europe, and Asia – with betting volume growing by 38 percent per month, albeit off a low base.
For Lasseters, this could all be the beginning of something very promising. “We want to see Australia at the leading edge for regulated safe gaming,” says David Ohlson, general manager of Lasseters’ online operations.
But Australia’s federal government wants to keep the business from growing any bigger – at least for now. Earlier this month, it advised Australia’s states to observe a one-year licensing moratorium.
The states, however, are keen on the바둑이게임 tax revenue online gaming can bring, particularly from offshore.
They plan to oppose any federal licensing moratorium. That will set the stage for a major struggle between the states, which claim dominion over gambling regulation, and Australia’s federal government, which claims jurisdiction over the Internet.
In Australia, real-world dice-and-mortar casinos exist in all the states, providing each a major source of revenue. However, as a seamy underside of traditional gambling becomes more apparant from broken finances, neglected children, and social, public concern that the industry is now out of control is growing – with online gambling representing a potential evil apex.
The Rev. Tim Costello, a Baptist minister who heads an inter-church gambling taskforce, continually repeats a pithy rallying cry to mobilize opponents. In interview after interview, he says, with all the catchy power of a mantra: “With online gaming, you can lose your house without even leaving it!”
“What we’re saying is this online technology is new, and it still is in early stages of development, so let’s now have a look at where it’s taking us,” Grebe said. “Five years ago, who would have thought people would be using the Internet for gambling?”
In the United States, legislation that would ban online gambling operations is now before Congress.
For his part, Minister Alston has said he’s “disposed” toward something similar – but Alston has called for state input into developing a nationwide approach. Meanwhile, Australia’s states say the federal government is doing a back flip.
Resort sues Internet casino operator using its name
MGM Grand Hotel Inc. is seeking an injunction to stop two Internet casino operators from using its trademark and domain name to advertise their online gaming services.
In a U.S. District Court suit, MGM Grand, which owns the domain name “mgmgrand.com,” allege Netcom Distributors, a company organized under the laws of India and its U.S. agent, Business Internet Connection, infringed its trademark by using their “mgmgrandcasino.com” domain name to operate an Internet casino.
The suit said the defendants refused to stop using MGM Grand’s trademark or transfer their domain name to the hotel-casino and “merely placed on their website a notice disclaiming affiliation” with MGM Grand.
The defendants could not be reached for comment.
